Finnmark Ski & Sail

Finnmark Norway

Finnmark ski and sail is an Arctic skiing experience that takes place in the western part of Finnmark county with start and end from the small village of Øksfjord, Northern Norway.

Our basecamp for the week is Goxheim, a sailing ship which we sail along the western part of Finnmark, somewhat 100km inside the Arctic circle. During six days we will experience vast nature and spectacular skiing straight above the ocean!

Program

Every day we ski from different summits down to the ocean with help from Goxheim and our skitouring equipment. Depending on weather and snow conditions we plan the route. Below is an example.

DAY 1

Friday. Together we go with transfer from Alta airport to Øksfjord harbor were Goxheim is anchored. Before dinner is served the captain will tell us about the safety routines on board. The guides will inform about the conditions and plans for the upcoming days. After dinner we sail to our first destination.

DAY 2-5

Depending on current weather conditions our tour-plan is flexible. We will drop anchor in sheltered bays, natural harbors or dock in small fishing settlements, and access the mountain for the day either directly from the ship’s deck – or a little bit more challenging: By using the dinghy for drop off on the shore. Each day we start with a steady skiers breakfast. We prepare sandwiches and thermos for the ski-tour every morning. After 5-7 hours we will be back, and we will be served the ship’s Soup of the day with white bread. Something to look forward to! After a debrief and after-ski drink we sail to next destination. During the sailing we have time to experience the arctic landscape and wildlife. This time of the year we also experience midnight sun, which can bring 24hour period of sunlight!

DAY 6

Ski-touring in the nearby fjords of Øksfjord, In the afternoon we will be back at the Harbor for our last night on board.

DAY 7

Friday – departure day. We leave the ship at latest 10.00 AM. Possible flight to home destination from early morning on Saturday.

Accommodation

S/Y Goxheim’s original name is “Goxheim”. The ship was built as a motor cutter in 1940 in Hatlestrand in Hardanger and rebuilt 1999 and 2002. The heating of the ship is from hot water circulating in radiators and the flooring. This creates a rather pleasant climate on board. If you should need more heat, it is possible to make a fire in the wooden fired stove in the lounge. And if that should not be enough – get in the sauna!
The main mast is 24,5 m above sea level, and for those of you who want to enjoy the view – get into the crows nest that is mounted 21 m above sea level!
